The stamps of the private telegraph companies of Great Britain form a most interesting, if little-known, branch of philately. Not only are the stamps themselves of capital interest, but the stories of the companies which issued them afford many valuable sidelights on the social and scientific history of the 19th century.
The stamps illustrate many aspects of Victorian graphic design Moreover they were all produced without thought of philatelists, so that no artificial " varieties" or " errors" occur; such as there are are perfectly fortuitous results of the processes of printing.
Some specimens are seen frequently-especially remainders without control numbers. But the vast majority of the stamps were destroyed with the message papers to which they were affixed, as soon as the message had been disposed of. Unused stocks were destroyed when the telegraphs were taken over by the Post Office in 1869/70. Out of the many thousands that must have been printed, there are in some cases only single specimens remaining, in others only three or four.
The prices quoted are based on actual prices I have paid, at auction and to dealers, for specimens in my own collection. They are in no way artificially inflated “catalogue prices". In cases where I have not purchased specimens I have endeavoured to indicate their degree of rarity. 1 The prices quoted for used stamps are for pen-cancelled copies. Copies cancelled with official obliterations, where such exist, are much scarcer, and worth from 25% to 50% more. Used on forms they are worth from 25% to 50% above normal, and with official obliterations on forms as much as 100% more.
